WASHINGTON, Oct 2 – President Barack Obama said on Friday that Russia is not distinguishing between Islamic State and more moderate Islamic insurgents in Syria as it has launched airstrikes to support the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
“From their perspective, they’re all terrorists,” Obama said at a White House news conference. “And that’s a recipe for disaster.”
Obama said he wasn’t going to cooperate with Russia’s attacks against the rebels. Obama said that Russia is propping up Assad and ignoring the Sunnis. That there are too many in Syria that are against Assad and his regime. This is not a smart strategic move for Russia, and now everyone is going to see Russia as the supporter of barrel bombs landing on kids. I want Russia to be successful, and effective because the problems we have are big. I hope Mr. Putin understands that doubling down for Assad isn’t going to make things better, but worse.
